Summer 2007

A. Required texts

  • BARRY FURROW ET AL., BIOETHICS: HEALTH CARE LAW & ETHICS (West 5th ed. 2004) - ISBN 0-314-15406-X

B. Handouts

Handouts will be placed in the Faculty Reception Area, 2nd floor, Storey Hall.  In addition, most (if not all) handouts will be available through the Syllabus web page.  If you have any difficulty whatsoever accessing the web or downloading or printing out materials from the Syllabus page, please contact me for assistance.  Downloadable documents will require Adobe Acrobat Reader, which may be downloaded for free from this site.

C. Attendance

Conscientious class attendance and participation are expected.  Because of the condensed nature of this course, I will have a near-zero-tolerance policy for absences this summer.  This means you can miss two classes (i.e., the regular-semester equivalent of two weeks) for any reason or no reason at all.  After that, you may miss a class only for a reason that would excuse you from an examination (death of close family member or your own serious illness).   If you will be absent to observe a religious holiday, please let me know in advance by email or a written note so it will not count as an absence.

D. Make-up Class

I am currently planning to be out of town on Monday, July 9 (for a commitment I made months before the summer teaching schedule was written).  Thus, we will need to make up that 100-minute class somehow.  We will discuss during our first class how this might be done, so please bring your calendars to class. My preference would be to schedule a special meeting of the class on a Tuesday or Thursday evening.

E. Final Exam & Grading Policy

The final examination will be a two-hour, open-book affair at 6:00 p.m. on July 25.  You may bring in your casebook, the handout packet, your own outline, and your own class notes.

Final grades will be based upon the final exams, with possible upgrades or downgrades for attendance and class participation.

G. Students with Disabilities

Dedman Law School provides equal educational opportunities to all.   If you need academic accommodations for a disability (either in class or for an examination), you must contact Ms. Rebecca Marin, Coordinator, Services for Students with Disabilities (214.768.4557), to verify the disability and to establish eligibility for accommodations.  In the law school, these accommodations are administered by the Assistant Dean for Students, Martin Camp.  It may be useful to consult Dean Camp to discuss your needs prior to contacting Ms. Marin.

H. Beepers and cell phones

My preference would be that you turn these off during class, out of respect for your classmates. If you must keep them on, however, please set them to "vibrate" and be respectful of others when you leave the class to answer your phone.

I. Office Hours

I will have office hours Mondays and Wednesdays immediately after class.  I am also generally around school most other times, so if the office hours don't fit your schedule, we can arrange to meet at another time.  Also, you can drop in (303 Storey Hall), sign up on the sheet on my door (preferred), call (214.768.3767) for an appointment, or e-mail me.
